ELLERTON was built for the manager of a large tea estate more than 100 years ago. Now owned by Luca and Iromi Poloni, it retains the character and tranquillity of times past. At 2,400 feet ( 800 meters) Ellerton combines the best of Sri Lanka’s weather. The sun in the day is warm, while the evenings and nights are relatively cool without the stickiness of the coast, nor the distinct chill of the hill country.
Close to the geographic centre of Sri Lanka, 3 hours drive from Colombo, 30 minutes from Kandy, Ellerton is ideally suited for exploring the Island. Set in beautiful gardens, Ellerton has 9 comfortable rooms, of which 4 are suites which can house up to four people. All rooms have en-suite facilities.
Our aim is to make you feel you are staying in a friend’s house and not a hotel. Three chefs produce delicious meals using local produce and Sri Lankan curries are always available as an alternative to our western menu. We value your privacy and so, our staff do not hover about but are always present should you need them. You can walk around the property, play board games and have your meals anywhere you wish. Tea, coffee and cake, as well as drinks, are served throughout the day free of charge.
Ellerton bungalow, situated in the hill country is the perfect retreat for those happy to spend a lazy day or two by the pool. As one guest said, “ is it the perfect antidote to the tourist processing machinery of some bigger hotels!”
Ellerton is, however, a destination in itself. Set in the beautiful hilly countryside near Kandy the capital of Sri Lanka's last kingdom, there are lots to do locally or further afield.
Explore the surrounding areas on foot, bicycle or tuk-tuk. The Orange Field tea factory is a must. Sabastian, a 3rd generation tea producer and the owner will give you a tour of his tea factory in such detail that most of our guests have said it was the highlight of their trip to Sri Lanka! Of course, you must visit Kandy’s famous Botanical Gardens and the Temple of the Tooth.
